BGS NZ Member Spotlight: Mark Seddon – Navigating Finance with Precision & Passion

We're thrilled to shine our BGS NZ Member Spotlight this week on Mark Seddon, Equity Research Associate at Jarden!

Mark Seddon is a driven finance professional with a keen eye for market insights and a passion for financial modelling. Currently an equity research associate at Jarden, Mark’s journey into the world of finance began in M&A tax consulting before transitioning into equity research. His experience working on complex transactions, such as the BGH and Sixth Street takeover of Pushpay, has shaped his approach to problem-solving in a fast-paced industry.

Mark believes in continuous learning—especially in data analytics and programming—and values surrounding himself with people who push him to grow. His career journey is a great example of seizing opportunities, developing expertise, and learning from those around him. We had the chance to learn more about his work, career lessons, and advice for others. Here’s what he shared:

1. Where do you work, and what is your current job title?

I work at Jarden as an equity research associate.

2. What led you to choose your career and/or industry?

Mid-last year I transitioned from an M&A tax consultant to equity research to better explore financial modelling which I had first been exposed to during my CAANZ studies.

3. What is a professional and/or career highlight you're proud of?

Working on the tax structuring of the BGH and Sixth Street takeover of Pushpay -although well above my capabilities, it was a great experience to be a part of such a large, fast-moving and ever-changing transaction.

4. What is one skill you think is important to learn or improve today?

Becoming as capable and efficient at Excel and upskilling in data analytics or programming. I am still trying to learn the latter two!

5. What is a key lesson you've learned in your career?

You know a lot more than you give yourself credit for, sometimes you just need the opportunities to express what you know, for you to fully believe your own capabilities.

6. Is there any book, podcast, or resource that has really impacted your work life?

I often find a few of the 'rules' in "12 Rules for Life" by Jordan Peterson, most importantly making friends with people who want the best for you. At work, you'll encounter many different types of people, what's important is aligning with those who want the best for you and will help you grow personally and professionally. I am very fortunate to have got many friends from work who have played such a pivotal role in my development.

7. What do you like to do when you're not working and why?

Outside of work I enjoy watching football and playing computer games with friends. Both are very relaxing and enjoyable to me.
